BECOMING A MEMBER…
In becoming a member, I am in agreement with the mandate and governing principles of AIDS New Brunswick:
Mandate
AIDS New Brunswick is a provincial organization committed to facilitating community-based responses to the issues of HIV/AIDS. The aim is to promote and support the health and well-being of persons living with and affected by HIV/AIDS and to reduce the spread of HIV/AIDS in New Brunswick.
Governing Principles
1. Community action, which is committed to:
1.1 Empowerment: Persons living with human immunodeficiency virus (PLWHIV) can achieve their aims by promoting their direct involvement in the decisions that affect their lives, and in the organizations which serve their needs;
1.2 Supporting communities affected by HIV/AIDS in their efforts to mobilize common issues and advocate social change;
1.3 Recognizing the importance of self-help and mutual assistance, natural support networks of PLWHIV, friends, loved ones, and the health and social or community workers involved;
1.4 A holistic approach encompassing the physical, emotional, mental and spiritual aspects of self, as well as an approach characterized by respect for human dignity that recognizes the validity of various sources of knowledge;
1.5 Recognizing HIV/AIDS not simply as a health issue but also as an issue needing a vision of social change aimed at overcoming social inequalities and addressing their underlying causes: injustice, ignorance, poverty, violence, drug use, racism, sexism, homophobia and heterosexism;
1.6 Recognizing the essential nature of preventative education and advocating for educational efforts which are accessible and effective province-wide;
1.7 Recognizing the need for the organization to be accountable to the communities which they serve.
2. Recognition of the social and medical dimensions of the fight against AIDS as being equally important and interdependent, and acknowledging the ensuing commitment to social reform.
3. Recognition of the autonomy of other AIDS organizations within the province and their freedom to act.
4. Recognition of the significant role played by the gay and lesbian community in the initial and continuing community fight against AIDS in Canada.
*AIDS New Brunswick membership lists are not traded with, or rented or sold to any organization.
